Developing ‘The D.R.G. Initiative’ with Lumberyard

Earlier this week, I gave a live webinar on our experience so far with Lumberyard, as part of Amazon’s Gaming Webinar Series. It was great to be invited to give a talk with Amazon, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.

8 months in to development of SlingShot Cartel’s ‘The D.R.G. Initiative’, I gave a brief overview of the team’s experience using Amazon Lumberyard in a real-world project. I reviewed some of the new systems that Amazon have introduced, talked about the challenges we have faced along the way, and gave hints and tips on how to make a multiplayer online game in the engine.

Here are the slides that I talked through:

Let us know about your experiences too! It would be great to hear how you are using the new systems, any best working practices you have discovered, and any tips you can share.

If you’d like to hear more about ‘The D.R.G. Initiative’, and for a chance to take part in our public beta programme later this year, please sign up at http://www.thedrginitiative.com, and don’t forget to sign up to this blog to get our latest updates on Lumberyard and game dev.

Happy game dev everyone!

  1. Hello everyone, I have a question about the creation of terrain, I ask here in this blog because in the Lumberyard forum I did not find satisfactory answers to my question and since you have a great knowledge of the engine, I want to know if it is possible to create a Terrain greater than 16 square kilometers, changing the engine or creating a gem, or is it not possible? I noticed from the slides that you have a level control gem.
My intention is to create an open world MMORPG. I have no experience in game creation and I am studying most Engines to choose the best to follow my learning. I’ve followed Lumberyard updates since 1.0 and expecting the Engine to be more complete and I believe with version 1.10 I can already study the Engine without suffering with major changes in the next updates.
Only in the EU4 do I see solid comments about huge terrain, but I want to use Lumberyard. If possible they could help me find a way forward. Thank you for your attention and sorry for my bad english.

  2. Hi arcount. When you make a new level, set the Heightmap Resolution to 4096×4096, and the Meters Per Texel to 16. This will give you a square area of 65.536 kilometers. Hope this helps.
